The Cloister Resort at Sea Island Golf Club - Course 2 in Saint Simons Island

The facility, which was named to "GOLF Magazine's" 1996 list of "Golf Medal Resorts," features four nine hole courses that are rotated weekly to make up a variety of eighteen hole combinations. The Plantation and Seaside Courses were redesigned by Robert Trent Jones in 1949, and most recently by Rees Jones in 1992. Joe Lee and Rocky Roquemore designed the Marshside nine, which opened in 1973. Today, they're historic masterpieces with massive bunkers and sweeping fairways. "Golf Digest" rated the Plantation/Seaside Course as the 3rd "Best Public Course" in the state for 1996, and 62nd among the "Top 75 Resort Courses" for 1992. The same publication rated it as the 7th "Best in State" course for 1995-96, and 14th best for 1997-98. "GOLF Magazine" selected it 76th best under the 1996 category of the "Top 100 You Can Play in the U.S." The Plantation Course is the most narrow, featuring huge oak and magnolia trees lining its fairways. The Seaside Course is highlighted by its huge bunkers and elevated greens. On this course, the ocean breeze will make club selection a challenge, and the marsh inlets will claim many balls. Three holes require long carries over the marshlands. The Retreat Course features large lakes coming into play on a few holes, plus the Atlantic Ocean bordering a few fairways. This course is scenic, narrow, well bunkered, and loaded with elevated greens. The Seaside/Retreat Course was ranked 92nd among "America's 100 Best Classical Courses" by "GOLFWEEK" for 1997. The Marshside Course demands precision shotmaking and is probably the most challenging of all the designs. The fairways are dotted with bunkers, and marshes come into play on several holes. One of the main features this resort offers is a golf learning center, which is a joint venture between the Sea Island Company and "Golf Digest." The golf learning center can simulate each facet of the game. Regardless of your skill level, beginners will benefit greatly from unlimited use of the practice area while more advanced players will be challenged by the endless short game and full swing options. The phone number for the Learning Center is (912) 638-5119. The other tee shown is an additional men's tee. The St Simons Island Club is also located at the Cloister Resort; to contact the Saint Simons Island Club pro shop, call (912) 638-5130. The nine hole green fees are available after 4 PM.
