Medinah Country Club - Course 2 in Medinah

This very exclusive club has three outstanding courses and it only reciprocates with other clubs at the head pro's discretion. Medinah #3 was carved out of a forest and features narrow, tree-lined fairways. The signature hole is #13, a 219-yard, par 3, requiring a tee shot over water to a small green. "Golf Digest" rated this 14th best out of "America's 100 Greatest Courses" for 1995-96, and 16th best for 1997-98. They also rated it as the "Best in State" course for the years 1995 through 1998. In addition, "GOLF Magazine" ranked it 27th in the category of the "Top 100 Courses in the U.S." for 1995, 28th for 1997 and 30th in 1999. "GOLFWEEK" awarded it 27th among "America's 100 Best Classical Courses" for 1997, 24th in 1998 and 32nd in 1999. The "ladies" tee is played almost exclusively by men, therefore, the slope and course rating shown are for men. Medinah #2 is the shortest course and also a favorite of the ladies. The fairways are more open than the other two courses. Medinah #1 is not as challenging as Medinah #3, but this course can be difficult because it has several natural hazards. "Golf Digest" rated this the 15th "Best in State" course for 1995-96, and 16th best for 1997-98. The "ladies'" tee on Medinah #1 has a men's course rating of 70.6 and a slope rating of 130. The greens on all three courses are large, fast, and undulating. Water hazards come into play throughout all three courses, and the terrain is undulating. The 1949, 1975, and 1990 U.S. Opens were held here; won by Cary Middlecoff, Lou Graham, and Hale Irwin, respectively. Larry Packard redesigned Course #1 in 1969. Harry Collis (1932), Roger Packard (1986) and Bob Lohmann (1986) have done redesigns on Course #3.
