Garden City Golf Club in Garden City
This exclusive men's club features a links-style course with wide fairways lined by a heavy cut of rough. In addition, there are many grass and sand bunkers (including pot bunkers) throughout the course. Water hazards (ponds) come into play on two holes. The 1902 U.S. Open was played here, and the winner was Laurie Auchterlonie. In 1926, Walter Travis reworked the course and today it is regarded as one of the top 50 in the world. Robert Trent Jones also did a redesign in 1958. "Golf Digest" rated this course 30th best out of "America's 100 Greatest Courses" for 1995-96, and 25th best for 1997-98. They also rated it as the 7th "Best in State" course for 1995-96, and the 6th best for 1997-98. "GOLF Magazine" awarded it 38th out of the "Top 100 Courses in the U.S." for 1995, and 36th for 1997 and 29th for 1999. "GOLFWEEK" ranked it 23rd among "America's 100 Best Classical Courses" for 1997, and 19th for 1998 and 22nd for 1999. It was also added to "Golf Digest's" list of "America's Historic Golf Landmarks" in 1998.
