Cypress Golf Club in Los Alamitos

This extremely difficult course needs to played more than once in order to score well. There are many dogleg fairways on the course, and some of the sand bunkers and water hazards are hidden. The links-style design features large mounds lining the fairways and surrounding the greens. Perry Dye, Pete Dye's son, has adopted his father's extensive use of sand bunkers and railroad ties. There are several fairway sand bunkers measuring between 50 to 100 yards in length. These look like waste bunkers, but are played as sand bunkers. Water hazards come into play on most holes, most often as lateral hazards, and are frequently positioned on the inside turn of a dogleg fairway. In addition, on many of these holes there will be trees lining the opposite side of the fairway, forcing your shots towards the water. The signature hole is #13, a 354-yard, par 4, which calls for a 170-yard tee shot over a large sand bunker. Players must then negotiate their way past a pond and a stream on the left side of the fairway. One of the most difficult holes is #18, a 461-yard, par 4, requiring a massive tee shot over water, then an equally massive approach shot past another lake guarding the right side of the green. One of the assistant pros refers to this hole as "the land of broken dreams." All the greens are fast and in great shape. There is a resident red fox, which hangs around the snack bar. This facility was the first public course in Orange County to go spikeless. Tiger Woods shot a course record 62 on this course a few weeks before he won his third consecutive U.S. Amateur. The club offers twilight rates and special discounts to residents of Los Alamitos. This facility is located next to the Los Alamitos Race Track.
