Baltusrol Golf Club - Course 2 in Springfield
This club, which has two championship eighteen hole courses, was originally founded in 1895 and has been listed by the USGA as one of the first 100 clubs established in the U.S. "GOLF Magazine" recognized it in their 1995 list of "The First 100 Clubs in America." The Lower Course has generous fairways and undulating greens. There is one pond that comes into play, and the terrain is rolling. The signature hole is #4, a 194-yard, par 3, requiring full carry over water to a small green. This hole has a spectacular view of the clubhouse. The Lower Course has been rated by "GOLF Magazine" as 22nd among the "Top 100 Courses in the U.S." for 1995, 1997 and 1999. "GOLFWEEK" selected it 34th out of "America's 100 Best Classical Courses" for 1997, 36th in 1998 and 29th in 1999.
The Upper Course has severely-sloped greens and narrow, tree-lined fairways. It was built on the side of a mountain, so most of the greens are difficult to read. There is one pond that comes into play, and the terrain is hilly. "GOLFWEEK" selected it 57th among "America's 100 Best Classical Courses" for 1997, 80th in 1998 and 57th in 1999. "GOLF Magazine" selected it 89th among the "Top 100 Courses in the U.S." for 1997 and 74th in 1999.
The original course was designed by Louis Keller and no longer exists. Robert Trent Jones redesigned the Lower Course in 1952, followed by his son, Rees, forty years later. The 1903, 1915, 1936, 1954, 1967, 1980, and 1993 U.S. Opens were played here.
